New Design Principal

Chris Barnwell Design PrincipalChris Barnwell, AIA, LEED AP, joined the firm as Design Principal.  He is a creative and award-winning designer with 28 years of experience in commercial, healthcare, education, and research facilities, Chris specializes in the exterior design of buildings and cladding systems. His early adoption of three-dimensional modeling and drawing techniques, and subsequent embrace of newer, cutting-edge technologies, has placed him at the forefront of raising standards for the entire industry.  Chris constantly strives for the best possible technical and aesthetic design solutions for clients, believing that collaborative design by a diverse project team is a keystone for design excellence.

New Senior Project Architect

CoyleShawn Coyle, AIA, NCARB, joined the firm as Senior Project Architect.  With a diverse portfolio of large healthcare clients, Shawn’s qualifications include almost 13 years of experience in healthcare architecture. He has exhibited his expertise in all phases of architectural design, documentation, and construction for projects ranging from $250 thousand to over $250 million. His extensive portfolio includes direct select healthcare work for several organizations including The Nebraska Medical Center, Sentara Healthcare, and Baylor Medical Center. He is highly accomplished at design, detailing, and specifications for both interior and exterior deliverables for projects in excess of $100 million and has led many fast track multi-discipline teams ranging from six to 60+ individuals.

New Design Lead

WielandGregory J. Wieland, AIA, has joined Altus as a design principal. Wieland will provide firm-wide design leadership with a focus on the firm’s healthcare practice, and developing next-generation facilities that incorporate leading-edge technologies, operational best practices, and foster efficiency and sustainability. He will also help the firm to expand its domestic and international markets.

Wieland has more than 37 years of experience in architectural design and master planning of healthcare, research and mixed-use facilities in the U.S. and around the world, including projects in Russia, Peru, Turkey, Taiwan, China, Mongolia, Canada, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates. He is recognized as a leader in innovative planning and design for international medical tourism campuses, large medical centers, cancer research facilities, student health facilities and community hospitals.

New Senior Project Designer

Michael-TangneyMichael Tangney, AIA, has joined Altus as Senior Project Designer.

Mike has extensive experience designing and planning healthcare projects of all types, including hospital campus master plans, freestanding medical centers, replacement additions and complete departmental renovations with phasing. With over 30 years in the field, he has a strong understanding of how the advances in technology affect the design of healthcare facilities. Major department experience includes cardiac, emergency, surgery, ICU, imaging, labor and delivery and inpatient nursing. He also has been involved in the design of numerous specialty hospitals across the United States, with specific expertise in the planning and design of cardiovascular facilities, both freestanding and within tertiary hospital facilities. He actively incorporates workflow processes capitalizing on the use of 3D imaging to test everyday design methodologies.

He is the winner of the Henry Adams Certificate of Merit, University of Nebraska, AIA, 1981. Mike’s expertise has been showcased in healthcare magazine articles and he has been a featured speaker at various healthcare conferences.
